AGARTALA, February 9 (TIWN): The security forces in Tripura along the Indo-Bangla border has been tightened up in wake of political unrest in the neighbouring country Bangladesh with the BSF Jawans along with the state police and other security forces beefed up along the border areas keeping a strict vigil to restrict any uintoward incidents here at the state.Border Security Force (BSF) beefed up security measures and surveillance at interior border locations in Tripura in view of political unrest in the neighbouring country Bangladesh. It has been learnt that that the State police and other security agencies are collaborating to tighten up security along the border especially in areas where extremists of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) have struck. Beside, the political unrest in Bangladesh and the upcoming ADC election here in Tripura has brought the state and its bordering areas under a strict vigil of the border guards. The border patrolling has been increased in the unfenced border areas and some vulnerable spots in the Indo-Bangla border. Sources said that the border guards will continue their strict vigil in entire stretch of Indo-Bangla border of Tripura till the improvement of political turmoil in neighbouring Bangladesh.

It is to be recalled here that India and Bangladesh recently decided to conduct joint patrolling along the Indo-Bangla Border by BSF and BGB in Tripura to check cross-border movement of Indian insurgents, smuggling of nacrotics and trans-border crime. The decision was taken during the two-day Indo-Bangla Deputy Commissioner level meeting which concluded recently.

While the Indian side raised issues about the presence of insurgents, the Bangladesh side raised the issues of narcotics smuggling in a joint statement signed by both the countries. They agreed for joint patrolling by BSF and BGB and Bangladesh security would swung into action if insurgents were found to be using their soil.
It is mentionable that, a total of 64 Border out Post (BOP) are present in the state.
Out of the 64 Border out Post (BOP) 22 BOP are in operation at present. The remaining 42 BOP will become operational soon. Four Indian northeastern states of Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Assam share a 1,880-km border with Bangladesh.
The mountainous terrain, dense forests and other hindrances make the unfenced borders porous and vulnerable, enabling illegal immigrants and intruders cross over without any hurdle. India is erecting a fence and putting up floodlights along the 4,096-km India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram to check trans-border movement of militants, and to check border crimes.
