Agartala, Feb 8 (TIWN):The 13 Finance Commission had sanctioned Rs 10 crore for the development of Kokborok language and from the sanctioned Rs 7.14 crore was given as asstiance to tribal district council for develop of the language. This was stated in Assembly by Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty.

Regarding inclusion of Kokborok on Eighth Schedule  to the Indian Constitution, the minister  said that  it contains a list of scheduled languages, originally 14, but since expanded to 22.
At the time the Constitution was enacted, inclusion in this list meant that the language was entitled to representation on the Official Languages Commission, and that the language would be one of the bases that would be drawn upon to enrich Hindi, the official language of the Union, said Chakraborty
He informed  that the list has since, however, acquired further significance, the Central Government is now under an obligation to take measures for the development of these languages, such that "they grow rapidly in richness and become effective means of communicating modern knowledge."
Opposition Congress MLA Dibachandra Hrangkhwal alleged that Left government has done very little for development of the tribal dialect.
Rebutting the allegation education minister said  that it was the Left Front government that had recognised Kokborok in 1979 and framed rules for its official in 1999. The language is being studied by tribal students at the school level.
He said on March 8, 2010, the state Assembly had unanimously passed a private member's resolution demanding incorporation of Kokborok language in the Constitution.
The copy of the resolution was sent to the Union ministry of human resource development by the then chief secretary on May 10, 2010, but the HRD ministry told the state government that demand for incorporation of altogether 37 languages in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution was pending.
The HRD ministry had constituted a commission to go into the issue as well as to make suitable recommendations. The commission submitted its report in 2013 but no further action has been taken.
