Road safety week ends on Thursday: No improvement in traffic rules and road accidents

Agartala, February 5 (TIWN): 26th Road Safety week ends on Thursday. As a part of this celebration, a seminar was organized at matangini Pritilata Auditorium where Transport Minister, Manik Dey had presided the Chair of Chief Guest. Among other dignitaries, IG (Law and Order), Anurag Dhyankar, Samarjit Bhowmik, Secretary, transport Department are present. But inspite of the observance of road safety week, no such improvement had noticed in the prevention of road accidents and to maintain traffic signal.

It is to be mention that the road safety week begins on January 11th.
Road safety week is observed every year in this small hilly State. But it fails to create any effect in the reduction of road mishaps and the loss of innumerable innocent lives.
The year 2014 and the beginning of the year 2015 cannot also be differentiated unlike previous years.
Road traffic accidents the leading cause of death by injury and the tenth leading cause of all deaths globally now make up a surprisingly significant portion here in Tripura.
On an average, Tripura records three road accidents and a death each day.
Almost 70 per cent of the police action was concentrated on keeping roads and women safe.
Interestingly, insurgency hit a low, only 3 per cent. According to reports of the state transport department, altogether 2581 road mishaps occurred in the last three financial years including 901 road accidents in the financial year 2010-11, 851 accidents in the year 2011-12 and 830 more road mishaps in the year 2012-13. altogether 222 persons were killed and 1254 persons sustained injuries in the financial year 2010-11, 248 persons died and 1042 persons injured in the year 2011-12 and in the financial year 2012-13 more 257 persons killed and 1219 persons sustained injuries in road mishaps
 “This year, the focus is on drunken driving and following simple traffic rules. We have chalked out different programmes for different days and they will be held in a throughout the State,” said a senior transport official. A drama on road safety was organized all over the State on the second day. Pamphlets with simple road safety messages will be distributed to motorists.
