AGARTALA / NEW DELHI, July 25 (TIWN): The union budget for 2024-25 has drastically decreased by the Modi Govt, bringing statistics Shashi Tharoor has stated in the parliament. Tharoor also stated, that the Budget failed to cover the dropped-out students of Indian schools, who left school to contribute earnings to their poverty-driven families. He said, “Whereas the dropping out is not in our hands, but the Govt can bring them back to school but unfortunately the budget does not mention about it. Three and a half million youngsters, thirty-five lakhs youngsters dropped out of school in the last academic year for which there are record. It is an indication of economic failure depriving the future generation of access to knowledge.”
“This budget barely pays any attention to education. There is a merely 1.2 lakh crores allocation for the education budget, which is a 7% decrease from the revise allocation of 2023-24 budget,” he said.
“More alarming is that the fact that the allocation for the department of school education and literacy as a share of the total budget outlay reduced from 3.16% in 2013-14 the last year that we were in government when the UPA was there to just 1.53% in 2024-25. And the combined allocation for both the departments have declined from four point 7% as a share of the total budget expenditure in our last year to 2.53% in your so far last year.
“The budget has slashed the funding for the UGC by 60%,” said Sashi Tharoor.
