AGARTALA, July 23 (TIWN): Social media users stormed into criticism over Election Commission’s role during Tripura Poll nomination submissions.

The social media users raised questions over the status of democracy in the state. A netizen said, the commission does not have backbone.

Election Dept Secretary Ashit Kumar Das said, “After the Panchayat nomination withdrawal date was crossed deadline, it shows 4550 seats were won uncontested out of 6370 seats. If I talk about the party-wise seat bagging, these are such as --- BJP 1818 CPI-M 1222, INC 731, Motha 838, CPIM(L) 5 and independent 127.”

Apart from that 58% seats were won at the Panchayat Samiti level without contest by BJP.

Also, BJP won 17% Jila Parishad seats as “uncontested”.
