AGARTALA, February 2 (TIWN): The High Court of Tripura today issued a notice to the Commissioner of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC)- Abhishek Chandra for carrying out eviction drive disobeying the High Court’s stay-order at Kumaritilla Lake area on January 22. Amid boiling situation, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) authority along with massive security arrangement carried out an eviction drive at Kumaritilla Lake on January 22, where many families were evacuated without getting rehabilitation. Failing to evacuate the land, the AMC had filed a writ petition at the High Court of Tripura. Subsequently, the residents had also filed a writ petition over the issue. Based on the petition, the High Court of Tripura had imposed a stay-order to AMC on eviction issue till January 29, the sources said. Even with the High Court’s stay-order, the AMC authority in collaboration with a massive security arrangement unlawfully evicted a major section of the residents from Kumaritilla lake area on January 22, said the court sources.
According to the court sources, altogether 44 families were directed to evacuate the illegally occupied land for several times at Kumaritilla lake area. Despite several notices, the illegally occupiers managed to stay here paying no attention to the AMC.
Asked about the issue, “For the time being, I’ve not received any such information on High Court’s notice yet. But so far I know that the AMC authority did not evacuate the residents for those the Court’s stay order is active till January 29”, said AMC Mayor Dr. Prafullajit Sinha over telephone.
