AGARTALA / KHOWAI, Feb 13 (TIWN): In 2021, a strange case came into limelight after a man named Prabir Debroy had killed 5 persons within a few hours including his own daughters and multiple people outside. Khowai session judge court had convicted him as a murderer and punished him with death penalty. When the case was brought to High Court because of the punishment nature rule, Advocate Harekrishna Bhowmik demanded the murder convict person’s punishment should be reduced because it is not the rarest of the rare cases. High Court found that there are lapses in the investigation and the murder convict person mental condition was not checked after the incident.
Advocate Harekrishna Bhowmik said, Prabir Debroy had no criminal background and what happened was that he killed so many people at a time.
At first Prabir Debroy murdered his two daughters and tried to murder his wife. His wife Mina Rani Pal left seriously injured but survived. Then Prabir Debroy killed his brother and then he went to road and attacked an auto. A passenger Krihsna Das died on spot and his son Karnajit Das left injured. Later during police patrolling when OC-Manojit Mallik tried to arrest him, the murderer killed him too.
IPC 302, 307 were imposed against him and on November 23, 2022, Session Judge Court in Khowai punished him with the death penalty. Now, the high court has reduced his punishment and sent him to life imprisonment.
Advocate Harekrishna Bhowmik said, the crime is brutal but it is not unusual. High Court has ordered convicted Prabir Debroy will be kept in a separate room and to be in jail till he dies.
