Agartala, January 29 (TIWN): Preparations were all set to observe the 67th death anniversary of the Father of the Nation, “Mahatma Gandhi”, at Tripura. This day is also celebrated as “Martyrs Day.” The main function will be held at Gandhighat where leaders will pay floral tribute to them.

Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar. A lawyer by profession, Gandhi led the struggle for India’s independence from British rule by following the path of nonviolence.

Ironically, Gandhi was shot dead by a Hindu fanatic, Nathuram Godse, at a prayer meeting in Delhi on January 30, 1948, less than a year after India became independent. Gandhi is venerated throughout India as the ''father of the nation''. His statues can be found across the country and nearly every town has at least one street named after him. India observes this day with deep respect and honour.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was the preeminent leader of Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. He is also called Bapu in India.
