AGARTALA, January 27 (TIWN): As part of much-needed step towards making citizens accountable for every drop of water they consume and also to measure its loss through leakages the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has completed at least 11,000 metered water supply lines in North zone, with the work for laying rest of the lines in progress, AMC Mayor Prafullajit Sinha told to TIWN.

The civic body has started work on a pilot project to install water meters in 30339 households in the Agartala Municipal Council territory. AMC Mayor P. Sinha talking to TIWN today said that the AMC has completed laying at least 11,000 metered water supply lines under the North zone with the rest of the work for laying the pipelines in progress. “The entire work of laying the 24X7metered water supply line is likely to be completed by the month of February”, Mayor P. Sinha told to TIWN.

However, the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) is currently engaged in laying the metered water pipelines in the household under the North Tripura.

The water metering system will help the civic administration calculate the quantity of water used, which in turn will help them determine water lost due to leakages or other reasons. The plan, of course, is to tax people based on their water consumption.

According to the AMC officials the metered water supply on the households will help in improving the management of water supply. Meters will also help in giving them information about water pressure. Officials of the water supply department said as of now, there is an imbalance in the distribution system. The core areas of the city get adequate water supply, but the situation is different in other areas.

The civic body aims at has envisaged 100 percent metered water supply in the city. The project is expected to be completed in a year’s time, said the officials.

However but, it has now become a matter of observation that the corporation could not provide fresh and hygienic water, but the corporation did took a step to make metered water supply city providing machineries to get back the taxes from the public at large.
