Agartala, January 26 (TIWN): With the aim to prevent theft of power and to save power in Tripura, a total of 44000 houses will be covered with smart meters in pilot project under Agartala power division- 1 in first phase.

According to a highly placed source of Power Department, the Central Government has approved a total of Rs. 24 crore for this project.

“Though, altogether 6.5 lakh valid power consumers exist in official record but around more than 2 lakh people are allegedly engaged in power theft. The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) failed to recognize the power thieves”, he said.

In such situation, implementation of smart meters in every house would significantly reduce power theft as the concerned department would be able to directly control the entire system from house by utilizing DCU meter, through satellite, the source added.

“The main advantage of smart meter is, the power consumers would be able to use it same as mobile prepaid services. The consumers can halt using power as per the requirement. After the implementation of smart meters, the entire power system will be controlled by remote”, said the source.

To implement the project, tender has already been invited while two companies- Wipro and Tata Consultancy have applied for the tender; added the communiqué.

“After the successfully implementation of pilot project, smart meter system will be introduce in every district of Tripura phase by phase along with the other parts of the country. The implementation of pilot project is likely to be stared within next few days while the entire project is expected to be completed in two years”, added the source.
