Agartala, January 8 (TIWN): A trial court of Agartala today sentenced Biswajit Das and Rabiul Hossain to suffer life-term rigorous imprisonment (RI) till death under section 302, 394, 120 (B), 449, 34 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for killing a retired school teacher Manju Rani Sarkar at Jaynagar area, which rocked the city way back in October 15, 2013. The court had found guilty two youths on January 03, this year in connection with the sensational murder case. Another youth Raqibul Hossain, resident of Boxanagar area at Bishalghar, who was earlier arrested in this connection, was acquitted from the charges of murder.

 According to APP Bhaskar Debbarma, who moved the case in favour of the government, Manju Rani Sarkar, 65, who used to live alone after her husband passed away in 2009, was brutally murdered at her residence in Jaynagar here on October 15, 2013.

“Her son, Shirshendu Sarkar and daughter-in-law live in Jallandhar, Punjab. She was alone on the eve of incident when miscreants entered into the first floor of the two-storey apartment and hacked her to death before escaping with cash, gold ornaments and other valuables”, said Debbarma. He further stated that after failing to contact his mother over phone, Shirshendu had called up their tenant, Anal Das, who live on the ground floor and requested him to enquire about the matter.

Of late, Anal went up to the first floor around 8.30 am and found that all the doors and windows were opened. He then saw Manju Rani lying in a pool of blood on the floor, he said. During questioning both Anal and his wife Mita said they had heard no sound or movement on the first floor on that night. According to the post-mortem report, Manju Raniwas strangled and hacked to death around 10.30 on October 15, 2013, said APP.

However, in course of investigation, initially police had arrested two youths including her relative- Biswajit Das and Rabiul Hossain in this connection from Durganagar area of Bishalghar by tracking mobile’s IMEI number. Another youth Raqibul Hossain was also arrested in this connection for delivering false statements during the trial, said Debbarma.

After conducting the trial, the trial court today announced the verdict ant sentenced Rabiul Hossain and Biswajit Das to life imprisonment till death under section 302, 394, 120 (B), 449, 34 of IPC while Raqibul Hossain was acquitted from the charges of murder, he added.
