AGARTALA, December 25 (TIWN): Road traffic accidents the leading cause of death by injury and the tenth-leading cause of all deaths globally now make up a surprisingly significant portion here in Tripura, said Minister for transport Manik Dey while speaking in a meeting of road safety week at civil secretariat, here today.

Minister for transport Manik Dey further said that earlier a decision had been taken for the installation of electronic traffic signals in the six prominent place of the capital city namely Math Chowmuhni, Orient Chowmuhni, Paradise Chowmuhni, North-Gate, Gurkhabosti and IGM Chowmuhni. But no preferable date had been fixed for its installation, the minister mentioned. Electronic traffic signals will be installed soon in the state but it needs some time, minister added.

Talking to TIWN recently, the Traffic SP (Sadar) Sriti Ranjan Das informed that few days back he met the additional secretary of the state traffic department in regard of installing electronic traffic signal system, but the state govt. had not taken any further decision to fix it.

It is to be mentioned here that earlier some electronic traffic signals were installed at the capital city but those got damage failing to function properly. On the other Chief Minister Manik Sarkar also replied in the assembly on a question raised by MLA Ashish Saha that electronic traffic signals will be installed soon but it needs some time.

However, it is to be mentioned here that along with the moving hands of the clock the number of vehicles here in Tripura are increasing at an alarming rate. And this is leading to road accidents every day making the capital city an accident prone zone. It is also mentionable that the road accidents have become the biggest killers in Tripura. Therefore what more left with the state govt. to play a role of a silent spectator till today? What makes the state govt. to remain back track from passing an order of the installation of the electronic traffic signal system? Is it the money again that matters Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar? But to mention here, the road accidents and the security of the people doesn’t wait for the so called money which always lacks with Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.
