AGARTALA, Nov 21 (TIWN): Anti-Bru repatriation protest has triggered massive violence in Panisagar, North Tripura injuring many persons including at least 5 police personnel. 1 Civilian who was in protest died in Police firing. The agitators alleged that the police started violence first by firing on the silent road blockade programme and then also Police had beaten the agitators which generated the clash. On the other side, the police officials denied the firing charge, saying, indeed 5 police personnel were injured along civilians in the violence. 45 years old Srikanta Das has died in Police firing on spot. This agitation and gherao programme fueled by violence caused a road accident which also left one person severely injured. This unwanted chaos in Panisagar is another reflection of Home Ministry's failure under CM Biplab Deb as the Anti-Bru agitators demanded just one 'high level meeting' but the State Govt remained silent about this demand.
The Anti-Bru group has two demands : 1) Not to give repatriation to all Bru families in Kanchapur but to scatter them across Tripura, 2) Also to compensate the previous riot victims from Mizo and Bengali families.
(The issue is of Kanchanpur but the protest at Panisagar was called on the context of No-2 demand that is the compensation to the previous riot victims)
This issue started after Central and Tripura both Govts had signed a pact along Mizoram Govt welcoming the Brus with "permanent resident cards" of Tripura, who are in Tripura for last 23 years in refugee camps after they faced violence in Mizoram state.
Today the agitators sat in protest but sudden the protest turned rioting and clash erupted between police and public.
