AGARTALA, November 29 (TIWN): "Physical education is the cornerstone of increasing the overall quantity of physical activity in schools and colleges. Furthermore, it teaches students the basics of physical literacy and how to integrate exercise into their lives in order to establish a lifetime of healthy living. Regular physical activity is associated with a healthier, longer life and with a lower risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and some cancers", said Minister for Rural Development Naresh Chandra Jamatia while addressing in closing ceremony of the week long indoor sports competition organized by BBMC college students union at college premises, here today.
The minister further said that young people are growing up in an increasingly complex and diverse society which is characterised by rapid change, sedentary work and leisure practices, changing family structures and roles, and the promotion of unhealthy behaviours by various sources. The Health and Physical Education learning area empowers students to critically evaluate the opportunities and challenges associated with living in modern society and teaches them how to take action to avoid injury or reduce threats to their health and well-being. Without the benefits provided by this learning area, individuals face a reduced quality of life and society increasing health care and social costs, he added.
Playing sports at any level club, intramural, or interscholastic can be a key part of the school experience and have an immense and lasting impact on a student’s life. Among its many benefits, participation in extracurricular athletic activities promotes socialization, the development of leadership skills, focus, and, of course, physical fitness, the minister added.
During the closing ceremony prizes were distributed to the winners.
