Tripura gears up for December 1st visit of  Modi: All NE States Borders on high alert

AGARTALA, November 23 (TIWN): On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s maiden visit to Tripura along with other North Eastern states, the Border Security is keeping their strict vigil along India's border with Bangladesh and Myanmar.Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Tripura on December 1to iaugurate the Palatana Gas based Thermal Power Project Unit-II. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, earlier chaired a meeting to review the preparation in view of Modi’s visit. State ministers, senior bureaucrats and top police officials were present at the meeting along with those from ONGC-Tripura Power Corporation. Chief minister Manik Sarkar also held a high-level meeting on Wednesday to review security arrangements ahead of Modi's visit. The meeting was attended by top civil and police officials and Sarkar's cabinet colleagues.

Earlier the exact date of PM Modi’s visit to Tripura was not fixed but later the top officials confirmed the date to be December 1.

Besides, security forces are keeping a strict vigil along India's border with Bangladesh and Myanmar ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the northeast . according to the top officials, the BSF (Border Security Force) and Assam Rifles have been asked to maintain maximum alert along the borders. Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Assam - share a 1,880-km border with Bangladesh, while Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh share a 1,640-km unfenced border with Myanmar.

ONGC Tripura Power Corporation (OTPC) had formally announced the launch of commercial operations of its first unit of the 3 MW Palatana Power Plant during the month of February 2014. After completion of 15 days trial run and necessary tests, the first unit was put on operation. The Ministry of Power has allocated more than 58 percent of power from the project to the North eastern states with Assam (240 MW), Tripura (196 MW), Meghalaya (79 MW), Manipur (42 MW), Nagaland (27 MW), Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram (22 MW each), while 98 MW is allocated to OTPC for merchant sales.

The Palatana Power Project is also expected to generate excess capacity, and a part of the power thus generated is planned to be sold to Bangladesh to meet its energy needs.
