Agartala, November, 22 (TIWN): Sick, bloody deadbody pictures in the different streets of Agartala city by Traffic Police Department are triggering havoc among the city dwellers, especially to the children and pregnant ladies. In order to create awareness for the people by the traffic police to wear helmets and the caution to drive slowly, some terrifying picture and banners are attached in the different Naka points and police barricades of capital city- Agartala triggering fear among the people.

The traffic police department in different places including IGM Chowhumani, Chandrapur and Motor stand areas attached the posters to create awareness and avert mishaps. It is to be mentioned here; numbers of vehicles are increasing in the state day by day. As per government statistics, state has registered sharp rise in automobiles, especially two-wheelers and small commercial transport vehicles. Till December 2012, the number of all kinds of automobiles stands at 2.6 lakh in Tripura, which were only 58,581 in the year 2001, said a source.
Though, the number of vehicles increased in Tripura, but the road status in terms of widening and bigger lining is remained same as it was earlier. Moreover, rush and reckless driving, overloading by the passenger carrying vehicles, insufficient knowledge of traffic rules and regulations are often cause road mishaps in the different part of the state.

Transport department sources said, 819 percent rise in automobiles in different categories was recorded in Tripura from 1972-1998. Around 502 two-wheelers used to run on the roads of Tripura in 1972; but the figure reached to 151251 till March, 2012. Light Medium Vehicles (LMV) like jeep, taxi, van etc registered a very high range of rise as well in the same time-frame.

The statistics said, the number of vehicles were registered 58,581 in the year 2001, while it was increased upto 66,507 in the year 2002. Gradually the increasing trend for number of vehicles has been extended in the year 2010. But in the year 2011, it abruptly increased to 2, 10,331 vehicles and in the year 2012 it touched the figure of 2, 60,227 vehicles across Tripura.

But the safety measures and cautions to avoid accidents must be implemented in such a way, which cannot appear to be a cause to harm the people. For example, Helmet can be made compulsory by law or impose a lower speed limit for those who do not use helmet. Issue of Helmet can be made mandatory with the sale of each two wheeler.  Helmet can be made compulsory for pillion riders also. Apart from road safety, the traffic department should also think about the common people.
