Agartala, Nov 15 (TIWN / IANS) India has conveyed its concurrence to Bangladesh for the latter to upgrade its diplomatic mission in Tripura capital Agartala to an assistant high commission, an official said here Saturday.
"The Bangladesh government had earlier sought to upgrade its diplomatic mission in Agartala to an assistant high commission. India of late conveyed its concurrence to Dhaka in this regard," a Tripura government official said quoting an external affairs ministry's communique.
"India's decision to do so is in keeping with the existing friendly relations between the two countries and will further strengthen Bangladesh's diplomatic representation in India," the official added.
The visa office of the Bangladesh government was set up in Agartala in 1974.
The official said Bangladesh has also been urged by India to set up its new diplomatic mission in Assam's main city of Guwahati.
Currently, Bangladesh has deputy high commission offices in Kolkata and Mumbai, besides a high commission in New Delhi.
A Bangladesh government official here said: "With the upgrade, trade and business and people-to-people contact would be further improved."
