AGARTALA, April 12 (TIWN) : As the Bengali new year is approaching and the Chaitra month is ending (the last month in Bengali Calendar), the Gajan festival is being held.
However, this year no fair was allowed, neither any gathering but Shiv and Parvati were seen acting home to home wearing masks.
Due to Coronavirus, which claimed over 85000 lives across world, such precautions have been taken.
Among the many folk festivals of here, Gajan festival has a special place even in today’s modern age too.
Although it is celebrated predominantly in rural Bengal, the festival is till celebrated in some places of the Agartala city also.
2 men generally dress up in Shiv and Parbati costumes and presents street dramas. This festival is enjoyed especially in villages.
Gajan is a Hindu festival, associated with such deities as Shiv-Parbarti.
The Hindus celebrate the festival mainly on the last two days of the month of Chaitra.This period is known as Chaitra Sankranti, when Sun will enter Pisces sign.
During Chaitra Sankranti people observe fast during this period devoting themselves to their God.
