AGARTALA, Dec 14 (TIWN): Royal scion Pradyot Deb Manikya said the Citizenship Amendment Act was a violation of the Instrument of Accession signed by the princely state to merge with the Union of India in 1947. Manikya who quit the Congress party recently said he had moved the Supreme Court against the “unconstitutional” Citizenship Act that for the first time allows citizenship on the basis of religion to six communities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Like other Northeast States, Tripura witnessed violent protests against the Act.Pradyot Manikya, who was invited to Delhi by Union Home Minister Amit Shah for a discussion, said Tripura was never under British rule and the State has already accommodated persecuted migrants from Bangladesh. Now, Pradyot Manikya is all set to file a petition challenging CAB in Supreme Court.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, now approved by Parliament and awaiting presidential assent, offers a path to Indian citizenship for non-Muslim minority refugees who faced religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh.

Eminent Lawyer of Supreme Court Kapil Sibal who has recently made a firing comment against Union Home Minister Amit Shah to represent Pradyot Manikya in the Court.

Kapil Sibal is also representing the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in its petition before the Supreme Court.
