Agartala, Oct 23 (TIWN): Over 100 trainee doctors undergoing internship Wednesday gheraou the Principal of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC)- Prof. K. K. Kundu in his office demanding hike of salary and regular payment of salary. Angry internees alleged that their due salaries are being disbursed due to the highly irregular and belated pattern.

The trainee doctors have demanded to the Principal to take necessary steps to fulfill the earlier given promise on increasing the salary and also for ensuring the regular payment of the same at earliest.

According to the sources inside AGMC, this batch of internees joined the internship since March, 2014 but they didn’t receive any salary for the initial three months. Following an agitation and submission of several deputations to the Principal and the Director of Medical Education on July, this year they had started receiving their salaries but that also in a highly irregular pattern.

They also alleged that during their last deputation 2 months back to the DME Prof. B. Bhattacharjee, he assured them to hike the salary to Rs 12000 per month, which is reasonable but still low in compare to the other medical colleges in the region. They have mentioned that internees of RIMS, Imphal are getting around Rs.16, 000 per month and even those in different medical colleges of West Bengal are getting around 15,200 per month as well.

They will move for massive protest if their demands remain unfulfilled. Regarding other problems like irregular water supply, messy conditions of the hostel’s mess foods and absence of a students’ canteen in the campus, Principal has also assured them that necessary remedial steps shall be taken soon, an internee have narrated. However, how much the present Principal who seems to remain less days on the ground in AGMC and spends more times on official or unofficial leave at his residence at West Bengal, can actually do is a big question, the internee has further added.
