Agartala, October 22 (TIWN): Indian Government is committed to develop the roadways between Ashuganj and Akhaura. Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Deepak Shoren informed this while visting the Brahmanbariya’s Kasba area. Other than that focus was given on the settlement of Container Terminal, building of a bridge over the Meghna river and supply of power to Bangladesh. Mr Saran was visiting Ashuganj Port on Monday.
While focusing attention on the development of roadways between Ashuganj and Akhaura, Mr. Shoren told that, Indian Government is committed to do that. Through this, it becomes easy to import and export essential commodities. Not only this, the system of transit system would be introduced that helps in the direct communication. It is to be mentioned that, import of 10 thousand metric tons of rice through Bangladesh’s Ashuganj is only the trial run to set up a transit system.
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh also stressed upon the setting up of container terminal. A container terminal is a facility where cargo containers are transshipped between different transport vehicles, for onward transportation. The transshipment may be between container ships and land vehicles. Through this, the Andhra Ships carrying rice after arriving can load the items in a truck and then stored it. From where, it can be supplied accordingly to the Akhaura border. Though the proposal for setting had already been planned in the year 2009-10, but still now no progress can be seen- Mr. Saran expressed dissatisfaction over this. Besides these, He assures that now the work will be progressed rapidly. It is mentioned that the estimated amount for this will be vested by the Indian Government.
Talking about, building of a bridge over the Meghna river, High Commissioner informed that, through this direct rail service from Agartala- Dhaka will be made possible. For this Bangladesh Government urged the Indian Government to invest some amount. On their reply, Indian Government had sanctioned the project and ready to invest money.-Mr. Saran further added.
On the issue of supplying 100 megawatt power to Bangladesh, Mr Saran also told that Tripura Government is responsible on behalf of Indian government's commitment of supplying 100 MW of power to Bangladesh from southern Tripura's Palatana power plant. Bangladesh under Sheikh Hasina alowed transports as a token of friendship for allowing equipments for Palatana through Ashuganj port. It is to be mentioned in this connection that Chief Minister of Manik Sarkar himself declared to supply 100 megawatt to Bangladesh during the inauguration of Palatana’s first unit.
