AGARTALA, October 14 (TIWN): Tripura governor P B Achariya on Tuesday has taken a serious exception on the role of police in dealing with the recent cases of atrocities on women.“The role of police in the case of Soma Majumder, a housewife who was brutally assaulted in public by a group of people two weeks ago at Chandrapur of Agartala is not at all satisfactory,” Achariya said.Talking to media he stated that based on the media report over brutality on a housewife by organised mafias on Oct 5 at public glare he called IGP (Law and order) Anurag Dhankar on Monday evening and took the stock of the situation.

“He admitted that police is under pressure for not taking action against the criminals. I made it clear, all the accused persons should be booked under law and police should ensure the security of the victim and protect the witness and evidences,” Achariya stated.

Governor heard the victim Soma Majumder in detail before talking to IGP Dhankar.

“It seems police is still continuing to British legacy and imperialist tradition forgetting post independence mandate that police is the friend of the citizen and help them in any distress condition,” he observed.

Achariya further stated that Women police station has misguided the victim while registering FIR. Also, police proceeded the case with weak sections, which is unintended for police in any case related to crime on women.

Expressing serious concern over increasing incidences of crime against women, Achariya advised police to work for without any fear and favour. So, that socially vulnerable section should not be deprived of their constitutional rights and legal aids.

“Besides, regular cases of women atrocities I came across a painful incident in Tripura a few days ago where two tribal girls committed suicide after being harassed and denied from justice but till date nobody is arrested,” he pointed out.

He however, suggested Chief Minister Manik Sarkar to administer at least one social project in each of the religious sites and temples like library, orphan home, good health care facility, traditional hailers stall, old age home, shelter house for the destitute along with the development of the temple is desperately needed in Tripura to make stronger relation among the people of the state, he opined.

Citing the example of Nagaland, he said: “about 78 percent of the government schools of Nagaland are running by proxy teachers and when I heard the information, I conceive an idea termed HEN (hidden energy of Nagaland. I asked my wife to adopt the most backward school of Kohima as mission and taught the students four subjects – English, Maths, Hindi and Indian culture twice in a week also I requested all the military officers and bureaucrats to engage their wives in the same task.”

Most of the ladies of such statures do not have any work despite having good academic background. Staying in small cities like Kohima, they have become also bore. After engaging them into service at the payment of Rs 1 per month as Guru Daskhina, it yielded a good result, he added.
