Agartala, Oct 7 (TIWN): Anger is brewing among the residents of Chandrapur area of Agartala after a middle-aged woman was humiliated in presence of the Pradhan of a Gram Panchayat in the name of settling a dispute at Agartala, yesterday. Though separate FIRs were lodged but even after 48 hours of the brutal incident, police could not arrest anyone of the 15 involved persons including women.
The victim was identified as Soma Majumder (Debnath), resident of Kalibari area in Chandrapur under East Agartala police station.
According to the police, few persons including women assaulted Soma by tying her with a pillar in presence of the Gram Panchayat Pradhan when she appeared for to attend a reconciliation meeting, yesterday. She blamed some persons for offering liquor to her husband- Nirmal Debnath on Monday evening on the occasion Dashami. Getting furious, some people including women physically assaulted Soma on the spot.
The very next day, she was again thrashed by them by tying her with a pillar when they were summoned for a hearing in the presence of Pradhan. As a result, Soma received grievous injuries on her person. She was taken to the GBP hospital immediately late on the evening.
Of late, a specific case was registered against 15 accused persons in connection with this case at East Agartala police station on yesterday, said police. A counter case was also registered against the victim Soma Debnath with East Agartala Women police station on the same evening.
Even after 48 hours of the brutal incident, police failed to arrest anyone of the 15 FIR named persons in connection with this case.
“We are investigating the matter. No arrest has been made so far in this regard. For the sake of investigation, we are unable to reveal the names of FIR named persons. The accused persons will be detained soon”, said Investigative Officer (IO) of the case- Sukramani Debbarma over telephone this evening.
