AGARTALA, Jan 8 (TIWN): All the political parties from various angles have opposed the Citizenship Bill, which welcomes all the Hindus in the country who illegally came in India after 1971. Regional parties have opposed Citizenship Bill as they want NRC’s implementation and pushing back all illegal migrants to their own countries , whereas CPI-M, Congress have opposed it as they raised question, why only Hindus will get citizenship but other religions ? In a press release, Tripura regional parties have opposed Citizenship Bill saying, “The Joint Action Committee of Civil Society (JACCS) wholeheartedly support to the strike called by the “North East Students’ Organization” (NESO) on 8th January, 2019 from 5 am to 4 pm in entire North East India for the initiative of the Govt. of India on the “The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016” and for the recent announcement of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India at Silchar rally that the said Bill will be passed soon”.

“The vigorous initiative taken up by the “North East Students’ Organization” against “The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016” is definitely encouragement and expectation for all the indigenous people of India and we extend our support and solidarity to peaceful legitimate movement in near future too for the security and protection of the indigenous people”, the press release mentioned.

“The state of Tripura is the only state in the entire country where the indigenous majority people (Tripuris) have been outnumbered by the illegal migrants from the neighboring country (East Pakistan, now Bangladesh). If “The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016” is implemented then the indigenous people of Tripura will definitely transformed into microscopic minority and it will also reduce the indigenous people of other North eastern states to minority. The Joint Action Committee of Civil Society (JACCS) is a non-political & secular platform, constituted by the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) & Student Organizations for the survival and safeguards of the right of indigenous people”, the joint action committee said.

The JACCS has intervened and opposed “The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 through submission of memorandum to the Additional Secretary, Lok Sabha Secretariat, New Delhi on 30thSeptember, 2016. The following activities have been carried out by the JACCS against “The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016”:-

(1) One day sitting demonstration with protest rally organized on 17th November, 2018 at Khumulwng and thousand of leaflets have been published.

(2) Delegation of JACCS met with the Hon’ble Governor of Tripura on 18th November, 2018 and submitted a Memorandum of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India.

(3) A letter was also communicated to Smt. Sumitra Mahajan, Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha, 16 Parliament House on 18th November, 2018 for sending the team of Joint Parliamentary Committee headed by Shri Rajendra Agrawal, Chairperson for study tour at Agartala & Khumulwng at the earliest.

The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) likely to submit their report in this ongoing session of the Parliament on 7th January, 2019 or onwards in a view to pass “The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. At this juncture, the JACCS appeals to all NGOs/CSOs and all individual to come forward together against such draconian Bill and take peaceful movement in legitimate way throughout the state and north eastern states.
