AGARTALA, Oct 19 (TIWN): Dussehra, the festival signifying the victory of good over evil, was celebrated with religious fervour and enthusiasm at ONGC on Friday. ONGC officials burnt giant effigies of Ravana, installed at the ONGC complex ground. Thousands of people, including women and children braved restrictions imposed by police and thronged the ground to witness the fireworks and the ritual of burning the effigies this evening.Amidst huge excitement, zeal and enthusiasm, the grand festival of Dushhera was celebrated with pomp and gaiety in the field of ONGC at Agartala. The field was decorated with illuminating lights and decorative accessories to give an auspicious look on the day of Dusshera. The effigy of Ravana was prepared with Fireworks and crackers inside it, as on the day of Dusshera the effigy of Ravan is burnt to put an end to the era of evil. However, ONGC asset manager like every other year burnt the effigy of Ravana at ONGC ground.Like all other years, huge number of crowd has thronged at ONGC to mark the celebration of Dusshera as the festival is only celebrated at ONGC ground.

Dussehra is a popular festival celebrated by Hindus all over India, albeit with different names.

It is also known as Vijayadashmi ('Vijay' meaning 'victory' and 'Dashmi meaning 'tenth day), as it is believed that it was on this day that Lord Rama killed the demon-king, Ravana and rescued his abducted wife - Sita.

ONGC Asset Manager, playing the role Lord Ram shooted an arrow with a flaming tip at the effigies from a safe distance and the crowd bursts up in cheer, as the crackers catches fire. The enthusiasm and the cheers sometimes even drown the deafening blast. Merriment ensues, as people indulge themselves games, dance and music that are held at the ground.

Largely, the day is celebrated to commemorate the prevalence of good over evil.
