Agartala, September 19 (TIWN): The National Students Union of India (NSUI) today gheraoed Director of Higher Education Bipradas Palit demanding parity in allotment of counting agents for student organizations in the student council election scheduled on September 20.
Speaking to reporters later on the day, NSUI state president Bapi Das said that the higher education Director denied to take any responsibility on the issue and said that subject would better be raised by College Principals. “The college principals wouldn’t listen to me”, Palit was said to have stated.
The NSUI leaders later met principals of the Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) College and Bir Bikram Memorial College (BBMC) separately.
Principal of MBB College Manidipa Debbarman agreed to the proposal of giving equal counting agents to both SFI and NSUI in the election process. Principal of the Bir Bikram Memorial College Dr. Dilip Sarkar, however, denied the proposal and said that arrangement agreed already couldn’t be breached.
NSUI president Bapi Das later said that the SFI and government machinery had fixed an evil nexus to give walkover to the ruling students’ organization by treating SFI and its tribal wing – Tribal Students Union (TSU) as separate organizations and granting them 18 counting agents each while opposition student wing NSUI was granted 18 counting agents alone.
Election would be held in eight out of 22 government degree colleges of the state from 9 AM tomorrow till 2 PM. The rest of the colleges had free walkover for SFI candidates since the opposition student wing couldn’t stage any candidates.
