Agartala, Sep 19 (TIWN): Additional 27,577 hectares land has been targeted to be brought under the purview of irrigation by the next three years, said PWD (DWS) sources and Department of Rural Development.
As per the report, the Department of PWD and Rural Development recently made success in reaching irrigable water in 1,12,806 hectares of land.
According to the planning of Khowai small irrigation project, irrigable water reached in 4415 hectares land and 31 km long irrigation canal was constructed for the purpose. Altogether 1710 hectares of agricultural land was provided irrigation facility under Manu small irrigation project and 17 km long irrigation canal was constructed for the purpose. Irrigation facility has been reached in 3,383 hectares land through 44 km long irrigation canal under Gomati project. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar directed to accomplish the work under Manu project and Gomati project by Jan 3, 2015 and Mar 31, 2015 respectively and urged to finish the project works within the stipulated time.
Besides, proposal for implementation of three projects in order to prevent flood following the overflow of Howrah, Gomati and Khowai rivers have been approved. Moreover, target has been set to construct both embankments of Howrah River from Champaknagar to Agartala to prevent erosion. Similar target has been set for other two rivers’ embankment that is vulnerable to breach. The project works would be started soon.
