AGARTALA, September 6 (TIWN): The Assam Rifles authorities have denied handing over the jawan who shot a woman for not complying to have sex with him on September 04. AR officials have informed that jawan was injured himself and was undergoing treatment, Officer-in-Charge of Sidhai police station Manik Debnath said.Local sources said that Rashamala Debbarma, local jhumiya woman from Dash Gharia area, was approached by Mongru Au for physical relations; a proposal which the latter readily denied. The jawan reportedly shot the woman in her right leg which led to grievous injuries.A big contingent of police today visited the spot at Dash Gharia under Sidhai police station of Mohanpur sub-division and tried to assess the situation. OC Manik Debnath said that the police is expecting to get the Mongru Au, jawan of 8 Assam Rifles in custody by the next 2-3 days.
Rashamala’s husband Rajendra Debbarma later lodged a FIR against the jawan under section 447/ 326 and 27 Arms Act. No arrest was made as yet, OC of Sidhai police station said. Asked about why the jawan couldn’t be booked with immediate effect, a highly placed source in the police today said that the area was declared as Disturbed Areas under the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) and para-troopers operating in the area couldn’t be booked just like that.
