AGARTALA, May 11 (TIWN): Reacting over the temporary suspension of the social pensions of the beneficiaries over 4.5 lakh, Tripura Congress President Birjit Sinha today said in a press conference, “May be the BJP Govt's age is less, but we can not tolerate undemocratic movements of the govt". Targeting the BJP Govt, the Congress President said, "Only two months of govt you are but if you take any wrong decision or take attempt for undemocratic attitudes, we have to protest and raise voice”. Birjit Sinha said, “We have called media with some burning issues. As opposition, seeing the undemocratic moves of the govt, we can not stay silent. On 24th March, 2018 a decision was taken by the Govt of Tripura to suspend the allowances of 4.5 lakh of people. Govt may do investigation and do inquiry to find out loopholes of the beneficiaries list, but that everyone's pension can't be stopped”.“Investigation may run but the undemocratic, inhuman decisions should be cancelled immediately”, he said.

“It’s a dangerous issue that 4.5 lakh poor people’s social pensions have been suspended. They need to buy medicines with that little amount of money. This is nothing but to snatch the foods from the poor and old people”, Sinha said.

The press conference was called following a road blockade at Agartala on National Highway protesting against the eviction drive against Congress party offices and other party offices in Tripura.

Before Congress, CPI-M also had protested against the action of the state govt.

CPI-M MP Jitendra Chowdhury said, “There are total 33 social pensions in Tripura and the BJP before coming in power said that it will provide alteast Rs. 2000 of allowance to each social pensioners instead of the current pension’s amount. But the last pension they withdrawn was the same like before, even though it was expected that in the first cabinet the Govt will announce about the 2000 rupees of allowance for all. If 50000 people are proven as fraud beneficiary, punish them and stop their pensions. The person who signed the beneficiaries names, suspend him, punish him but why the social schemes have been stopped ?”
