AGARTALA, September 4 (TIWN): In an unprecedented turn of events, jawans of the Border Security Forces (BSF) today came under attack from villagers at Ashabari Border Out Post (BOP) in Khowai district. The BSF jawans tried to intercept an attempt of smuggling following which the villagers started attacking the jawans with bamboo sticks and country made weapons, a source in the BSF claimed.

Local sources, however, denied the allegation and said that the BSF jawans started indiscriminate attacks on villagers in the name of search and anti-smuggling operations following which the villagers united and protested the move.

A highly placed source in the border sentinels today said that BSF troops of BOP Ashabari, while engaged in patrolling  duty along the Indo-Bangla International  border, were attacked by few miscreants at ward no 4 of  Rahimpur village on Thursday.

The BSF official today made a strong attack on the state police activities and alleged that the cops were deliberately involved in unholy nexus with the political leaders of the locality. “Inaction on the part of local police has emboldened such miscreants”, he said.

He took a critical charge at the police and alleged that political leaders were involved in the unholy nexus to safeguard smugglers in the area. “The local police is cautious initiating any due legal process as both miscreants related to a local leader of the area”, he said.

The BSF official later said that the smugglers attacked BSF duty troops with bamboo sticks and managed to take some ganja into Bangladesh through confrontation. The paramilitary troopers didn’t shoot anybody, the BSF official claimed. He added that a BSF jawan sustained serious injuries during the brawl. He is currently under treatment.
