AGARTALA, September 4 (TIWN): A one-day workshop on co-ordination among line departments for protection of children and women in Tripura was organized by Tripura Commission for Women in collaboration with child line Agartala at Pragna Bhavan here this morning.
Speaking in the workshop D.G.P. Tripura K. Nagraj said that the major crime in Tripura is crime against women and it is increasing day by day. Awareness among the people is the only way to prevent these kinds of crime. Under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, thousands of cases were registered in the past few years in Tripura. The state has a population of 3.7 million, of which nearly half are women, he mentioned.
He further said that cases of crimes against women in Tripura are rising. In 2011, 1,503 such cases were registered while the number went up to 1,650 in 2012 and 1,706 in 2013. According to the National Crimes Record Bureau, Tripura ranks second after Assam in the number of crimes against women in northeast India.
Childline is a national 24-hour free phone emergency outreach service for children in need of care and protection. The project supported by the union ministry of women and child development and linking state governments, NGOs, Allied systems and corporate sector, he added.
Director of social welfare and social education D. Darlong, Chairperson of Tripura commission for protection of child rights, Chairman of child welfare committee west Tripura district Dr. Bikash Roy, Programme co-ordinator of childline India foundation Avik Mitra and other officials were present in the workshop.
