State far behind in the sector of eye donation: Badal Choudhury

Agartala, Aug 28 (TIWN): Our state is the first rank in blood donation. But, unfortunately, the state is far behind in the sector of eye donation, said Minister for Health and Family Welfare Badal Chowdhury during a state-level workshop on eye donation at Pragna Bhawan here today. State Health and Family Welfare Society in collaboration with National Health Mission (NHM), Tripura organized the programme.

Minister for Health Family Welfare Badal Choudhury today admitted that the number of eye donors in the state is under the belt till date. Choudhury said, “Though the number of eye donors has risen since the inception of the eye bank in IGM Hospital in 2006, more donors are required to evolve," said Badal Choudhury.

The workshop was organized as a part of observance of 29th National Fortnight on Eye donation' starting from August 25 till September 8. Referring to different non-government organizations present in the programme, Choudhury urged to keep on awaking people about eye donation.

Six persons namely, Sudhir Sarkar, Bisweswar, Bina Rani Debbarma, Jhoton Rishi Das, Mampi Das and Kebal Das who underwent cornea transplantation also remained present there in the workshop.

Addressing the programme as Guest of Honor, Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Department - M Nagaraju emphasized on voluntary participation of students of educational institutions to combat non-communicable diseases in the state.

Ex-Executive Director of NHS-RC, Government of India Dr. T Sundararaman addressed the workshop as Special Guest. He said that the medical infrastructures in the hospitals have developed compared to past 10 years and the state could now lead in public health system. Citing the example of Cuba, Dr. Sundararaman said that the state could get inspiration from Cuba in setting an example. "Poor countries simply cannot afford such a health system.  Well over 100 countries are looking to the example of Cuba. Tripura should also get inspired from Cuba," said Dr. Sundararaman.

Speaking at the programme as Special Guest, Dr. Rajasekhar Perumulla, Head of department of Organ Transplantation, SRM Institutes for Medical Sciences, Chennai presented a brief outlook on organ transplantation, related laws among others.

Besides, MD of National Health Mission, Tripura Dr. Sandeep N Mahatme addressed welcome in the programme. Director of Health Services cum Additional Secretary of Health Department - Dr. Satya Ranjan Debbarma presided over the workshop.
