AGARTALA, August 9 (TIWN): The Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch today observed the International Day of the World's Indigenous People in Tripura alongwith the rest of the world. Addressing the rally at Agartala here this evening, Rural Development minister Naresh Jamatia said that the day was historically significant for protecting and upholding rights of the indigenous populace. Jamatia urged the state to contribute their bit in the job of protecting the rights of the tribal communities.
“People from different tribal communities are enjoying their rights in Tripura. We, at the state government, feel that we have to work harder to attain higher levels of success. The nation should surge ahead in protecting tribal rights as well”, he said.
A number of social service organizations and political frontal wings today came out with rallies from Agartala city to mark the day. The central programme was held at the Agartala City Centre complex this afternoon where hundreds of youths gathered to mark the day.
“Let us recognize and celebrate the valuable and distinctive identities of indigenous peoples around the world. Let us work even harder to empower them and support their aspirations”, Jasmatia said at the rally today.
The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of the World's Indigenous People is observed on August 09 each year to promote and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population. Also known as the World Tribal Rights Day, the day recognizes achievements and contributions that indigenous people made to world including issues like environmental protection.
