Speaking to the media in Delhi, Barman alleged that the recent elections had been conducted under an “illegal prime minister.” His remarks echo the Congress party’s broader allegations of irregularities in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
“We are here to protest against SIR and seek the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar,” Barman said.
He also accused Kumar of acting in the interests of the BJP and alleged that the ruling party was exploiting the country. “Gyanesh Kumar is now naked. He did these things to help the BJP, and the BJP is looting the nation,” he added.
The protest, organized by opposition leaders, including members of the INDIA bloc, was directed against the SIR process and alleged electoral irregularities. Opposition leaders have demanded accountability from the Election Commission and raised concerns about the revision of electoral rolls.
The delegation’s attempt to approach the Supreme Court also faced procedural hurdles. According to reports, the Supreme Court registry flagged 14 defects in the opposition’s petition, while Chief Justice of India Surya Kant advised the delegation to follow the prescribed judicial procedures.
