AGARTALA, March 8 (TIWN): After the opposition Tipra Motha party resigned from opposition to align with BJP, former chief minister Manik Sarkar named CPI-M state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury as the next opposition leader.
Jitendra Chowdhury is Tripura CPI-M’s state secretary and an MLA from Sabroom.
Manik Sarkar was reacting to Tipra Motha’s decision to align with BJP, when he said so.
So far Tripura Assembly had three opposition parties – Tipra Motha, CPI-M, Congress, and BJP, IPFT has been the ruling party in the Assembly. But now after a tripartite agreement was signed between Tipra Motha and Govt of India and Govt of Tripura, the party decided to align with the Govt.
Manik Sarkar said, the alliance happened so fast and the Tipra Motha MLAs’ became ministers faster than that.
“As CPI-M has 9 MLAs and that’s the highest opposition MLAs in Tripura, so naturally, CPI-M now restored its position as major opposition. Jitendra Chowdhury will become the Leader of the opposition”, said Manik Sarkar, who held the Leader of the Opposition position in Tripura Assembly from 2018 to 2023 till he decided not to fight further election in the state.
