AGARTALA, May 13 (TIWN): Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy once again repeated the demand of death penalty for acid attackers.
In a tweet Governor said, “Yet another acid attack on mother and child,by auto driver Sukur Ali at Vill Bhandarkhola,PS Gopalnagar,Distt North 24-Parganas,West Bengal. I repeat: We must have death penalty as maximum and 10 years minimum punishment for acid attacks”.
Earlier also in Human Rights programme Tathagata Roy said, “Death penalty must be given to the acid attackers”.
However Roy also added there can be 10 years minimum punishment.
In India presently the Section 326 A in the Indian Penal Code lays down the punishment for acidthrowing. The minimum punishment is 10 years imprisonment. It can extend up to life imprisonment with fine. A separate law to punish offenders in such cases was passed along with amendment of law on sexual offences.
