NEW DELHI, Oct. 10, 2026: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee was detained by Delhi Police on Saturday during protests in the national capital against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the revision of electoral rolls.
Recent reports have focused on police action against protesters and political activists ahead of the October 10 demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The protest was organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) to demand the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process.
Banerjee had earlier expressed support for the protest and said she might participate, although her attendance had not been confirmed in advance.
According to The Economic Times, Banerjee was among more than 1,000 protesters detained amid heightened security arrangements surrounding the planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar. Several other Trinamool Congress leaders and opposition activists were also reportedly detained.
The protest was organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), with support from opposition groups, to demand the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Delhi Police had denied permission for the planned gathering and deployed security personnel across key areas of the capital. Restrictions affected public transport, with entry and exit gates at several metro stations closed. Police also detained protesters attempting to reach the designated demonstration site.
The detentions came amid escalating political tensions over allegations that the electoral roll revision process had unfairly affected voters. The Election Commission and the BJP have rejected allegations of political manipulation.
