A devastating train collision occurred in southern Spain on Sunday, leaving at least 21 people dead and over 100 injured. The high-speed trains, one traveling from Malaga to Madrid and the other from Madrid to Huelva, derailed near Adamuz, Cordoba province, around 6:40 p.m.
Emergency services responded promptly, deploying ambulances and support vehicles to the scene. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, with 25 people seriously hurt. Local residents rallied to support victims, providing blankets and water.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, with authorities assessing damage and casualties. Transport Minister Oscar Puente emphasized the importance of aiding victims, stating the impact was "terrible" and left many trapped.
The Iryo train, operated by a private company partly owned by Italian state railway group Ferrovie dello Stato, was carrying approximately 300 passengers. The Renfe train's carriages were badly damaged, with twisted metal and seats scattered everywhere.
Rail services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended, with investigations ongoing. The incident has sparked concerns about rail safety, echoing Spain's worst rail accident in decades, which killed 79 people in 2013.
