Sidney, Dec 14 (TIWN): A terrorist attack occurred during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, leaving 16 people dead and many injured.
The attack, which was deemed an act of antisemitic terrorism by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, targeted a Jewish festival where hundreds had gathered.
Two gunmen were involved, and one was killed by police while the other was arrested in critical condition. The gunmen were later identified as a father-son duo, with the father being shot dead and the son, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, being hospitalized.
The attack drew widespread condemnation from world leaders, including the United States, Israel, and other countries. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized Australia's decision to recognize a Palestinian state, claiming it "pours fuel on the antisemitic fire". The attack has also raised concerns about the rise of antisemitism in Australia, with Jewish leaders warning about the hate directed at the community.
