AGARTALA, July 5 (TIWN): The government struggling to appoint a full-fledged DGP after the retirement of C. Balasubramanian, who was one of the finest top cops the state has had.As the DGP, Mr. Balasubramanian has earned goodwill for his well-mannered attitude unlike other senior IPS officers. As a temporary arrangement, the government has appointed K. Nagaraju to discharge duty of the DGP though he is junior to D P Sinha, Kishore Jha and PVK Reddy.Sources in the police headquarters confirmed, Mr. Sinha is the senior-most Manipur-Tripura cadre IPS officer who has been on central deputation for long time. He is not interested to assume the office of DGP, Tripura since he is going to retire within next few months.

Though Mr. Reddy is senior to Mr. Jha, the government doesn’t want to take him back due to various compulsions. And, the government has reservation to call Mr. Jha to become DGP of the state.

Since three senior-most IPS officers are not fit for the job, the government is in a fix to have a full-fledged DGP. Another IPS officer- AK Sukla who is also on central deputation, is yet to complete 30 years in service, a mandatory provision to become DGP of a particular state.

Under this circumstance, the government may opt to bring ‘outsider’ to take the charge of DGP as it had done earlier by appointing SK Chatterjee, an Odhisa cadre IPS officer.   Considering all aspects, the government wants to allow Mr. Nagaraju to lead the state police untill a permanent DGP is chosen. Here it may be noted that Mr. Nagaraju has already completed 30 years as IPS officer thus became eligible for the top cop job.

Not only DGP, two Addl DGP posts remains vacant for long time as eligible IPS officers prefer central deputation rather returning to the state.

However, there is no dearth of officers at the level of IGs and DIGs.
