Demonetisation : Cashlessness sting still painful on day 42, lack of 500 rupees notes turned the situation more critical

AGARTALA, Dec 20 (TIWN): There was no respite in sight for cash-strapped people on Tuesday as queues outside banks and ATMs for withdrawing money continued across the city with rising anger and pain. Here in Tripura, the lack of 500 rupees notes have turned the situation more critical. Not a single ATM is providing 500 rupees notes, resulting much cash-shortage while exchanging notes. However, people finding no other option chose to stand in bank lines, whereas there are huge crowd all the time occupy the counters. The situation is worse in SBI and Gramin Banks, where maximum number of people are found standing. Somehow better conditions were witnessed outside the Bandhan Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank, HDFCs.

The main problem is occurring due to lack of 500 rupees notes in ATMs. If the ATMs begins to circulate Rs. 500 notes, then the problem of small note crisis would be diminished within 3/ 4 days. But here whereas 80 % ATMs remains in non-workable condition, the others are found depositing only 200 rupees notes.

The provision of Rs 24,000 for withdrawal, however has turned out to be far from ideal, since most banks were barely able to ration Rs 4,000-5,000 to their customers.
A crowded situation was witnessed outside the banks on Tuesday morning. The problem is facing by those families, where everyone is working outside and doing 10-5 jobs.

It’s worthy to mention here that the disaffection with the demonetisation move continued, and seemed even to gain strength over days manifestly, with people waiting in queues denouncing Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the strongest terms. But the allegation can not be dumped fully on the central govt as 500 rupees note are available in banks, but what to do if they do not circulate?

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has clarified another important announcement that no questions will be asked if any amount of old currency is deposited in one go, but repeated deposits may provoke queries. "If they go and deposit with bank any amount of currency no questions are going to be asked to them and therefore the 5000 rupee limit does not apply to them if they go and deposit it once," Jaitley said. "But if they are going to go everyday and deposit some currency, same person, that gives rise to suspicion that where is he acquiring this currency from. In that event a person may have something to worry about. Therefore everyone is advised whatever old currency you have please go and deposit it now," he said.

However, in this regard Tripura CM Manik Sarkar said, “As per RBI record a week back 84 % has been deposited but what about circulation of the deposited money? Corruption, taxation all these terms are using to hold money in banks, but all are old notes? Banks are actually the den of corruption and via banks all the corruptions are happening”.

‘Why Modi is not taking any step against liquor & flight businessmen Vijay Malia, rather Mailiya has been given 1200 crore rebate’, he said accusing BJP Govt at centre.

He then told the RBI I/C of Tripura N P Topno that whereas PM and Finance Minister set a deadline why RBI Chief didn’t mention any time limitation of black-money mission? Because bankers are clever, will be silent….people of Tripura are not happy with the attitude of the RBI”.
