AGARTALA, May 27 (TIWN): Lieutenant General R.K. Rana on Monday took over as 28 th Director General of the Assam Rifles (DGAR), succeeding Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh who has retired, a Assam Rifles spokesperson of 21 sector headquarter told TIWN today.
“Lt Gen Rana was commissioned in June, 1976, in the Rajputana Rifles and has a coveted career profile both in command and staff appointments. The General was recipient of the Sena and Vishisht Seva medals,” said the spokesperson.
The new DGAR had commanded an infantry battalion in counter-insurgency operations, a mountain brigade in a high-altitude area, an infantry division on the India-China border and the Special Frontier Force in cabinet secretariat. On staff assignments, the general officer has held the important assignments of general staff officer 1 (operations) of an infantry division, director (operational logistics at the Army headquarters, colonel general staff of an area headquarters, deputy director general (welfare) at the Army headquarters and general officer commanding of an area headquarters.
The general is an alumnus of Sainik School, Karnal, and National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, and Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He has done instructional tenures at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, the commando wing, Belgaum, and the Infantry School, Mhow, and is an all-round sportsman having excelled in boxing, football, swimming and firing.
Assam Rifles has 46 battalions, 15 of which are deployed along the 1,643-km-long unfenced Myanmar border. Its headquarters is in Shillong.In Tripura, four battalions are deployed under 21 sector.
