Nation eyeing at the first woman Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar

AGARTAL, Aug 14 (TIWN): A day before her 23rd birthday, Dipa Karmakar became the first Indian to qualify for the apparatus finals in an Olympic gymnastics competition, after she finished eighth in the qualifiers of the vault event.Dipa, who is taking part in her first ever Games, scored 14.850 points from her two vaults at the Rio Olympic Arena, which temporarily placed her at sixth. She then had to wait for nearly five hours for 38 other competitors to finish their vaults, before her qualification was secure. There were some nervous moments towards the end of the qualifiers when Canada's Olsen Shallon pushed Dipa down to the eighth, the last qualifying spot.Dipa's total of 14.850 was better than her scores at the 2015 World Championship vault final in Glasgow where she finished fifth with 14.683, but could not nail as high a score in Rio off her first vault as she had done in Glasgow.In the all-round individual standing, Dipa finished 51st with 51.665 points in a field of 98 gymnasts. She did not enter the all-round competition.Dipa Karmakar now has become the first Indian to reach the final of artistic Gymnastics. She qualified after finishing eighth in the qualification with a total score of 14.850 in two vaults. After USA Simmon Bills scores 16.050, Dipa could rank 8th on the match. However, breaking down all the obstacles Dipa will play in final for Individual vault.

However, nobody can deny that the 22-year-old has given a life to India’s gymnast world.   Apart from being the first Indian woman, she also became first from the country to qualify for the quadrennial extravaganza after 52 long years. Till day from India although 11 Indian male gymnast have taken part in the Olympics, but Dipa bring and brought-up in NE State Tripura has created history in Indian Gymnast World.

But Dipa and her coach alone ran the show, whereas for other countries plenty of supporters, multiple players were present. But Dipa and her coach were found to encourage each other on that foreign environment. Moreover, she has qualified for final on Aug 14. 

Dipa Karmakar live up to the pre-competition hype as she vaulted into history and the final of the individual vault finals in her debut Olympic Games after finishing eighth in the qualifying round here.

In the process, she earned the distinction of being the first-ever Indian to make the final of a gymnastic event in the Olympic.
