Agartala, July 4 (TIWN): Tripura's former Chief Secretary, former Union Textile Secretary, present Executive Chairman of Tripura Skill development Mission Dr. S.K.Panda was awarded Louis Pasteur Award for the year 2016 by the International Sericulture Commission (ISC) - a consortium of 17 silk producing nations.

Dr S.K.Panda communicated to TIWN via the email below on July 4, 2016:

I have been selected for conferment of Louis Pasteur Award (considered as the Nobel Prize in Silk Industry) for the year 2016 by the International Sericulture Commission. Copy of the letter [No. ISC/2/10/2016 dated July 4, 2016] communicating the award is enclosed for your kind perusal.

The award will be given in the 24th International Congress on Sericulture and Silk Industry scheduled to be held at Bangkok, Thailand.

This is an international award, which is  given for outstanding work on promotion of silk production. My work and association with promotion of silk industry is spread over almost three decades from 1988 to 2015 in Tripura, Odisha and at the national level.It mostly related to extending the benefits of 
science for alleviation of poverty and empowering women.

I had my PhD in sericulture form Utkal university in 2005. 
I have a book and a film on the subject.

The award is decided by an international jury. 

I feel deeply obliged to the women sericulture rearers of Tripura in particular for giving me the opportunity for working in promotion of sericulture, which, I feel , has played an important role in my selection for the award.
