AGARTALA, May 18 (TIWN): Finally after years of investigation into the 17 crores MGNREGA scam, it has come out that kingpin Bimal Chakraborty is so far alleged of embezzlement of about Rs 14 crore of funds into the case.Talking to TIWN correspondent, SP Sepahijala Pradip Dey said that investigation into case is almost completed and most of the charge sheets are already submitted in the court. He further said that filing of final charge sheet is underway and it will be soon submitted in the court. He further said that the main accused BDO Bimal Chakraborty is entirely involved in the case and so far he is accused of embezzlement of Rs 14 crore in the entire embezzled amount of Rs 17crore of MGNREGA funds. However, until and unless the final charge sheet is filed nothing can be said clearly, added SP.Talking about taking action against the accused he said that once filing charge sheet is completed police will take action according to the direction of the court.
Reportedly, after years of the scam came into limelight, the main accused BDO Bimal Chakraborty is yet roaming free and police is reluctant to take any action. Still today after years have passed by police is yet stick to the stage of investigation.
It is to be mentioned here that altogether 39 charge sheets are file so far and it also includes the kingpin Scamster BDO Bimal Chakraborty.
It may be mentioned here that Bimal Chakraborty belongs to a powerful CPI-M family of the state and close to chief minister Manik Sarkar. His elder brother Amal Chakrabortyis CPI-M youth wing DYFI’s Secretary.
Another elder brother Kamal Chakraborty is Commandant of Tripura State Rifles and eldest brother Shyamal Chakraborty is a Chemistry teacher in Calcutta University who is proposed to be Vice Chancellor of newly coming Tripura state university.
Opposition Congress had earlier demanded to shift the trial of Bimal Chakraborty from Bishalgarh Judicial Magistrate Court as Bimal’s sister in-law and Kamal’s wife Susmita is working as PA of the Magistrate.
It may be mentioned here that under tremendous pressure from all corners and wide spread media publication on the Rs. 17 crore MGNREGA scam, BDO Bishalgarh RD Block Subrata Das had lodged the FIR against the then BDO of the block Bimal Chakraborty in Bishalgarh police station. Police had registered a case in this connection (case no. 135/14) under section 409 of IPC. The special audit report of MGNREGA for the financial year 2012-13 and FY 2013-14 had found misappropriation of more than Rs. 17 crores. The internal audit was done during 05/05/2014 to 30/06/2014.
