AGARTALA, April 10 (TIWN): With just counting days are left for the celebration of the Bengali New Year, Traffic personnel are witnessed in every corner of the Capital. Allegation has been raised that every time just before any occasion vigilance of traffic and police personnel gets tighten up charging hefty amount of fine.
Locals alleged that every time when any occasion or festival knocking at the door, traffic and police personnel tightens their vigilance on the street and charges hefty amount from those who violate the law.
It is to be mentioned here that locals alleged that traffic and police personnel charges hefty amount in the name of fine. They mentioned that where the fine is Rs. 200 the officials collect Rs. 400 or more.
Most of those fined were two-wheeler owners caught riding without helmets or triple riding with two pillion passengers.
It is to be mentioned here that other than festive season, no traffic and police personnel are see on duty accept some major parts in the city.
Just before any festival number of traffic and police personnel are observed on duty in various corners of the road detaining people flouting rules. Besides, allegation has been raised that in the name of fine the personnel charges hefty amount which is more than the amount fixed by the law.
It is to be mentioned here that it is the duty of the traffic personnel to maintain the law and order in the state. Besides, it is the duty of the traffic personnel to keep strict vigilance and to act according to the law order.
However, here it seems like the duty of the Traffic Personnel has become a way of earning hefty amount money in the name of fine from the common mass.
Reportedly, areas like Beltali, M.B Tilla, S. D Mission and others where no officials are observed deployed on duty, these days those areas also covered.
Bike riders with no helmet, licence, triple riding with two pillion passengers, more than three passengers on auto are being fined.
It is to be mentioned here that traffic personnel doing their duty is no doubt an excellent initiatives but taking bribe and charge more than the allotted fund is bringing shame to the department.
Strict vigilance over the traffic could curb down the rising road accidents, but unlawful charges of hefty fine creates problem for the people as well as the vehicle riders.
