AGARTALA, March 8 (TIWN): Women in Tripura are still suffering from lack of time and opportunities in the male dominated society, says Chairperson of Tripura Commission for Women on Monday ahead of International Women’s Day.

Talking to TIWN correspondent on Monday, Chairperson of Tripura Commission for Women Manika Datta Roy said that though it has been claimed that both men and women are equal in every field but the ground reality is that, it is male dominated society where the women are exploited brutally.

Therefore, women’s are unable to move forward and grab the opportunity. Women are quite capable of being just as successful as men when given the chance outside of the house, said Roy.

However, participation of women at all levels and the strengthening of the women’s movement should be focused. Women must be encouraged to work together with boys and men, to empower nations rather to suppress them with only household works, added Roy.

Stressing over the violence against women in the state, Chairperson of Tripura Commission for Women mentioned that women are victimised all across the nation.

“But compare to Nation, Tripura is much more safer. Women and children can walk safely on the roads”, said Roy. But statistics says Tripura ranks 4th in crimes against women.

However, for some of the cases of crime against women occurring in the state, commission is there, different NGO’s, police are there to help the victim out of the situation.

Stressing over the celebration of the international Women’s Day, she further stated that on this day people must promise to give respect to the women and their work. Besides, more initiatives must be taken to curb down the crime against women.

It is to be mentioned here that where Tripura Commission for Women claims that crime against is very less in Tripura compare to the other part of the nation, the ground reality of Tripura is totally different which is further evident from the issues like Kalpana Murder Case at Bridhi Nagar under Ranirbazar Police Station. In this case, her husband CPI -M local leader Jiten Das was suspected as the mastermind of the case.

Similarly, under the Manik Sarkar’s regime a son has killed his mother after she has discovered her son’s illicit relation.

MLA Manoranjan Acharjee has been expelled in allegation of sexually abusing a minor at Amarpur party office and there are many other reason where women are victimised.

In another case, every citizen where celebrating Republic day this year tribal girl was brutally raped in Tripura where the accused tied the girl to a mobile tower and raped her. This incident has triggered panic among the citizens.

However, TCW Chairperson further appealed that people should come forward and encourages the women in the state to actually give freedom to women and to save them from the hand of violence.
