AGARTALA, Feb 26 (TIWN): Ten-day long training programme on Fisheries Aquaculture Development and Transfer of Technology has been inaugurated on Friday at fish health investigation centre of Collegetilla.

The programme has been organized by National Federation of Fishers Co-operatives Limited with the financial support of Ministry of Agriculture.

It is to be mentioned here that the National Federation of Fishers Co-operatives Limited is an apex institution of Indian Fisheries Cooperative Movement. It is also a national level federation of fisheries cooperatives.

The objective of the National Federation of Fishers Co-operatives Limited is to promote and develop the fishery cooperative.

Besides, to educate and to assist the farmers in their effort and to expand the fishery cooperative and serve as exponent of cooperative opinion in accordance with the cooperative.

It was established in 1980 as All India Federation of Fishermen Cooperatives and was rechristened as National Federation of Fishers Cooperatives Ltd. in 1982.

FISHCOPFED is well promoted through schemes and funds of the Department of Animal Husbandry Dairying, Fisheries and Department of Agriculture & Cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture, National Cooperative Development Cooperation and National Fisheries Development Board.

With an aim to make the fish farmers of the state self-reliant, various initiatives are going on in the State under different project.

However, the initiatives taken under MGNREGA and other central schemes generated man-days for the daily wage labourers and creating water bodies in the state which would help the fish farmers but despite of several initiatives, small and big fish markets of the state are yet dependent over the imported fishes of outside of the state.

Most of the time fishes from Bangladesh, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal dominate the markets of the state, local fishes are observed very less on the local markets.

Despite of several initiatives the state farmers are yet behind in comparison of number of fishes in the State local markets.

It seems like the initiatives taken by the State Government are inefficient to increase the number of fish production in the state.

However, the Minister for Animal Resource Development Aghore Debbarma, Minister for Fisheries Khagendra Jamatia, Managing Director of FISHCOPFED B. K Mishra and others were also present at the programme.
