AGARTALA, Feb 19 (TIWN): Central Ground Water Board on Friday organized a one day long workshop on Water Conservation, Water Security, Water Quality, Climate Change and Best Practice at Agartala.
The programme was organized with an initiative to tackle the twin hazards of de-saturation of potential aquifer zones and consequent deterioration of ground water quality.
It has been mentioned that there is an urgent need to conserve and augment the ground water resources and through other suitable management intervention.
During the programme, it has been mentioned that rapid economic growth and urbanization has put tremendous pressure on the water resources especially on ground water resources of the country.
However, increasing dependence on the groundwater as a reliable source of water has resulted in its large-scale indiscriminate development in various parts of the country without due regard of the recharging capacities of aquifers and other environment factors.
However, the vision of the Central Ground Water Board is sustainable development and Management of Ground water resources.
It is to be mentioned here that Central Ground Water Board is entrusted with the responsibilities of providing scientific inputs for management, exploration, monitoring, assessment, augmentation and regulation of ground water resources of the country.
However, the Central Ground Water Board was established in 1970 by renaming the Exploratory Tube wells Organization under the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India. It was merged with the Ground Water Wing of the Geological Survey of India during 1972.
During the programme, Chief Engineer of PWD of Water Resource Tapan Lodh, Regional Director of Central Ground Water Board of North East Region along with others were present.
Altogether two technical sessions has been conducted at the workshop and later technical discussion and recommendation were also conducted.
It has been mentioned that the board has 18 regional offices, each headed by a regional director, supported by 17 engineering divisions and 11 state unit offices for undertaking various filed activities.
