AGARTALA, Feb 2 (TIWN): Now when the condition of NH44 has turn pathetic, including the part of Tripura, the state government has started putting pressure on the Centre and Assam government to resume face-lift works of national highway.

It is to be mentioned here that Allegation rose that the condition of National Highway has worsened after it was handed over to the State PWD by NHAI.

After the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MORTH) handed over development and maintenance of 104 km of the Assam Agartala National Highway (NH-44) to the PWD from Border Roads Organization (BRO) in July 16th, 2013, the condition of the NH-44 is allegedly getting worse day-by-day due to negligence of PWD and now again state has asked centre and Assam government to resume face-lift works of national highway.

Currently, the face lift works on the NH’s Assam part has been stalled leading to major inconvenience to free movement of vehicles on the life-line road.

Inclement weather and improper management of National Highway44 from Agartala to Sabroom is in pathetic condition over past one month and the department is in long yawning siesta.

The condition of the NH44 has worsened from earlier and is now in poor condition.

National Highway 44, the only road connectivity that connects the mainland India with the eastern part of Meghalaya, Barak Valley in Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura has for a long time now remained in a dilapidated condition posing a threat to the helpless commuters.

Traffic jam, accidents are happening regularly in the road due to its poor shape and allegedly, the condition of the NH-44 is worsening day-by-day due to negligence of PWD and the agencies assigned by the department. The condition of the NH- 44 is in such a bad shape in some spots, it could be snapped at anytime, the source added.

The condition of road has been gradually decreasing over the last few years. On main roads like at Agartala and the national highway passing through the city, potholes are very common.

The situation is no better in the NH44 where development works have taken a backseat. The road has been left completely neglected, and roads here have not been repaired for months despite repeated demands.

However, the sources said that Addl DG of NHAI would be arriving here on a two-day visit. During the visit, he would monitor the national highway works in Tripura and Assam on January 27 and 28.

On the Agartala-Sabroom national highway, the government is putting pressure on the agency to speed up the work. The agency has already begun ground works for starting double-lane works.
